The Uruguayan artist Carmelo Arden Quin, mentored by Joaquin Torres Garcia, was the creator of the international movement Madí
Arden Quin is recognized as one of the major figures of geometrical abstraction.
In the 1940s and 1950s, Carmelo Arden Quin pioneered the « shaped canvas » concept, followed in the 1960s by others including Frank Stella. Hence, Arden Quin freed himself from the traditional rectangular or square canvas, creating canvases of audacious non-orthogonal shapes.
Recently, Madí museums have opened: Museum of Geometric and MADI Art in Dallas in 2003, Museu Madi in Sobral, in Brazil, in 2005.
The organization of the major retrospective Madí by the Museo Nacional Reina Sofia de Madrid in 1997, as well as the major MOMA exhibition Latin American Artists of the twentieth Century in 1993, have contributed to the definitive recognition of Arden Quin’s contribution to the history of 20th century art.
