Roberto Matta (1911-2002) is a chilean painter. He left his native country and his architect career to work with Le Corbusier.
As a painter he realised a serie of paintings, called ‘‘Psychologicals Morphologies’’, where he used a new technique: with a wipe he spread the color on the canvas in such a way it is not the brush which decides the line. It is the beginning of his rapprochement with automatic writting.
Upon Marcel Duchamp’s request, he moved to New York to flee the World War II.
After his exclusion of Surrealists’ Group, he left the USA for Chile then Europe. Since he became a politic activist artist. He cut all ties with his country when the General Pinochet made a military coup in 1973.
