Biography

I came to Paris in the spring of 1955 to find the answer to a deep aspiration. I should have to discover my own way, thanks to the knowledge and to the practice of the western painting.” Chu Teh-Chun

French-Chinese painter, Chu Teh-Chun (1920-2014), along with Zao Wou-ki and Wu Guanzhong, belongs to the trio of ” Three Musketeers “. With such painters, the traditional Asian techniques of the painting are integrated into the gestural painting of the western lyrical abstraction. Trained at the School of Fine Arts of Hangzhoy, Chu Teh-Chun is Linen Fengmian’s pupil. After having taught the western painting at the National University of Taipei, Chu Teh-Chun settles down in Paris in 1955 and attends the Grande Chaudière. Nicolas de Staël impressed him and helps Chu Teh-Chun to give up the figurative painting. His international fame is effective and in 1997, he is the first Chinese painter to be elected at the French Fine Arts Academy.
