MARCEL BROODTHAERS. Soleil Politique > M HKA, Anvers > October 4, 2019 to January 19, 2020

With « Soleil Politique », the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp (M HKA) has organized the first retrospective exhibition of Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers (1924-1976) in his own country in a decade. A traveling exhibition had traveled in recent years to show his works among others in New York, Sofia or Madrid, but the exhibition of M HKA is different. The museum decided to make it its own project by approaching the artist’s work from an Antwerp angle with the Antwerp gallery Wide White Space as its starting point. This large retrospective tends to provide a broad picture of the breadth of Broodthaers’ themes, media and presentation strategies.

First a poet, journalist and photographer, then became an artist in 1963, starting by freezing in the plaster the unsold items of his last collection of poems « Pense-Bête », Marcel Broodthaers is undoubtedly one of the giants of art history of the XXth century.

“Soleil Politique” approaches Broodthaers’ work with the idea that art is always political and that politics is a constant negotiation without conclusion. (…) Since his death in January 1976, the M HKA has tried to grasp who this complex, erudite and humorous artist was. His fascination led to a rich speech, an international representation of his work in important public collections and retrospective exhibitions. ”
